Culture in Bonn

The cultural offerings are great - almost as if Bonn was still the capital. A good overview about exhibitions, concerts and cinema programs is provided by the daily newspapers in Bonn, city and leisure time magazines as well as the city of Bonn on its homepage.

Museumsmeile and city museums

The five houses of the Museumsmeile (mile of museums) form a special attraction. They are situated along the main avenue ‘Bundesstrasse 9’, which connects the center of Bonn with Bad Godesberg. At the Museum of Science Koenig children and adults can see animals from very close. In the historic building, the biodiversity of the whole world can be experienced. Not far away from there, the Haus der Geschichte shows the German history from post-war to present - the entrance is free. The next address at the Museumsmeile is the art museum. The city house has one of the internationally most important collections of German art. From there it is only a few steps across the Museumsplatz to the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Here are large permanent and changing exhibitions of which many attract an international audience. Readings and lectures take place at the forum of the Bundeskunsthalle. At the Southern end of the Museumsmeile, the Deutsche Museum Bonn is situated, which is dedicated to the theme „research and technique in Germany after 1945“.

However, the smaller museums in the city should not be overlooked. Among them are unique cultural sites like the Beethovenhaus, in which the famous composer was born and the museum of women, which is the first one of its type in Germany. At the Stadtmuseum Bonn one can dive into the eventful history of the city, which was once a Roman settlement, the Prince-Elector‘s residence and the capital.

Opera, theatre and cabaret

Bonn has a city theatre, which is consisting of the opera at the Rhine, the Werkstattbuehne, the chambers play „Kammerspiele“ in Bad Godesberg and the Halle-Beuel. Here, operas, theatre plays and dance performances are presented on any day, as well as readings and experimental theatre. Additionally, small, free theatres and the open stages exist. The Beethovenhalle is also a popular venue for cultural large events as well as the Brückenforum in Beuel. Cabarets and stages are in Bonn‘s city and in the urban districts Bad Godesberg, Beuel, Endenich and in the Southern part of the city „Suedstadt“. An overview is provided by the city of Bonn‘s Internet.

Films beyond mainstream

Films in original language or films about themes like migration and intercultural life are shown mainly in arthouse movie theatres. They can be found over the internet portal choices. One of the arthouse movie theatres is inside the cultural center "Kulturzentrum Brotfabrik". East of the Rhine in the urban district Beuel, where concerts, theatre and dance performances are also shown.

International and intercultural Bonn

Bonn‘s book-week migration („Bonner Buchwoche Migration“), which takes place every two years will next be on in 2013. Additionally, there is the international and intercultural culture and encounter fest („Internationale und interkulturelle Kultur- und Begegnungsfest„) and the intercultural week („Interkulturelle Woche“) in autumn. A lot of international flair is brought to the city with the UNO as, for example, with the United-Nations‘s-Day.

Language and communication pave the way to the understanding of cultures. This is what the city library also acknowledges with its intercultural-library.
